Holy Rosary Church - Bangkok

The Portuguese, the Spanish and French were the first Europeans to establish a presence in Thailand.  Long before Bangkok became the capital, the Portuguese had a settlement in Thailand's second capital, Ayutthaya.  There are tombs and cemeteries in Ayutthaya where these early Portuguese settlers are buried, and you can tour these sites.  The Spanish, incidentally, brought the hottest chili to Thailand from Mexico centuries ago, and today it's an essential ingredient in Thai cooking.  So globalization goes way back.  - 2018 e-mail
