Yes, there are a lot of car accidents on Thai highways and interstates. In the cities, more motorcycle accidents. But although there are a lot of motorcycles, I bet bangkok has more cars on its roads than LA. And this is with a metro, skytrain, overabundance of taxis! There are a couple of Thai holidays when it's really dangerous to be on the roads: Thai New Year and another. So then you have to deal with drinking and driving. On the plus side, people are at least buckling up now. When I was first there in 2000, it seemed people were not using seat belts, whereas we were using them starting in the late-80s. In Japan and Hong Kong, was more like the US regarding car safety.
