Kade and I went there by boat from the city center (near the Winter Palace), and walked from the dock up to the fountains. Very nice experience.
Catherine Palace, like Peterhof, was occupied by the invading Germans, then looted and burned by them when the Red Army advanced. The Amber Room panels completely vanished and have never been found. The Russians rebuilt both palaces to their exact likeness (decades of work), and artisans even redid the Amber Room.
