The Dutch

Spain conquered Portugal (late 1500s?) and brought them into their kingdom.  When the Spanish barred the Dutch from getting Asian spices from Lisbon (the Portuguese were the leading seafarers then), the Dutch set sail to modern day Indonesia, colonized them, and started their own spice trade.  This was in 1602.  By 1640, the Dutch dominated all of Southeast Asia. - podcast
