Food Memories

I am going to just list some of the restaurants Kade and I enjoyed together in Bangkok.  Right now I am sharing mainly chain restaurants.  I hope to find photos from the time period, 2000-2005, and add images and some personal notes.   Some of the branches we liked have been renovated, gone out of business entirely or just moved to other locations.  And yet some are right in the same spot.

Noodle House (Siam Square) - This was possibly a chain restaurant.  In 2000, we went to the one that was in Siam Square, right along Sukhumvit Road.  It looked like it was a bit "on its last legs."  I don't remember really seeing them around just a few years later.  We went there on one of our first dates.  I recall we ordered a couple of dishes.  Kade shared a lot of hers.  Thais do that when eating.  Everybody is trying everything.  Fun in the that way.  And if you're dating or in a relationship, wow, expect your Thai lady to even occasionally feed you some bites of her dish, using her chopsticks, or at least giving you access with your own.  In the USA, although we do share from time-to-time, it's done in a different way.   Usually the mentality, though, is to carve out your territory and set boundaries to protect what you ordered.  This sharing mentality wasn't just something I observed with Kade, it was a cultural thing in Thailand.  And I liked it!

MK Restaurant (Central World & Central Pinklao)  -  If you like hot pot style cooking, roasted duck, green noodles and dim sum, this is a fabulous place.  The menu is way more extensive than that, and for a chain restaurant, it was super popular.  I'm sure it still is!

Fuji (Central World) - We went to Fuji restaurants in a few locations in Bangkok, but the one I remember most was on an upper floor of the World Trade Central (later changed to Central World).   It was right near where you purchased movie tickets.  We loved going to movies together.  We would buy tickets to a movie for a certain time, then get a table at Fuji.  The menus had photos of the variety of foods.  I always loved the fruit shakes:  watermelon and coconut were favorites.  We'd order sushi, seaweed salad and usually chicken teriyaki, which came with rice.  Occasionally we got a fish dish.  It was always good.  And the end, they'd give you a complimentary small coffee or tea, with some tasty crackers.  We gave Fuji a lot of business!  Right next to Fuji was a Baskin Robbins.  Sometimes we'd get ice cream.  All of this was before the movie.   While I'm thinking about, on that same floor of Central World, there were all these video games (or arcade games).   One we liked to play was where you saw a couple of photos, side by said, that were exactly alike except for one hard-to-find thing.   You only had a few seconds to pick it out, then another photo would pop up.  Kade and I would play together.  It was fun.  After movies, we'd sometimes walk out of Central World to the Pratunam intersection that had lots of street food and mom-and-pop restaurants.  We'd indulge.

Daidomon (Center One & Central World) - I remember we went to Daidomon in the old Center One mall near the Victory Monument.  We also went to one on the movie-level floor of Central World.  You would grill at your own table.   Probably the first time I had tried that style.  You would just order a lot of different meats and veggies, and they would bring it out fresh to the table.  Kade and I would grill it together, then dip the meats in sauces.  You'd move the cooked items from the grill to your plate.  You could also order from the menu - dishes they'd prepare for you.  For me, eating at all these unique restaurants was so entertaining.

See Fah Restaurant  (Silom & Siam Square)

Hard Rock Cafe - Kade and I went on one of our first dates to the Hard Rock Cafe.  It and Planet Hollywood were in the Siam Square/Central World area.  I remember we ordered American Fried Rice and listened to music.  HRC Bangkok has since closed.  You can read about it here.

S&P Restaurant & Bakery (Central Pinklao) - We would sometimes eat at S&P, at tables.  Most often, though, we'd buy some bakery items.  We'd get some curry puffs and almost always, crab salad sandwiches.  They also had tuna sandwiches, and other types.  Often we'd get the foods to-go and eat in a taxi or back home.  S&P had good coffee as well.

Zen (Central Pinklao)  - I know we went once here with Kade's mom and sister.  Zen was good.  It was probably pricier than Fuji, but I didn't like it as much as Fuji for whatever reason.  Fuji had more of a fun vibe.

Black Canyon Coffee & Eatery (Center One & Major Pinklao)

Hachiban Ramen 8

Milk Plus (Victory Monument, Big C & MBK)

Chester's Grill (Major Pinklao & Center One)

The Pizza Company (Center One)

Swenson's (Pratunam)  - a US ice cream chain
