Last year my plan was to take my cousin on a walk along the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok - The River of Kings.
Landmarks we'd see: Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), Wat Pho (the Reclining Buddha temple), historic monuments and other very impressive buildings. In all, I'd point out at least eleven famous temples in Bangkok's Old Town. The walk was going to be a leisurely 7 miles, broken up by snacking, sweating, massages and dinner. And since we were staying in Bangkok's New Town (area with skyscrapers), the idea was to take the MRT Station where we'd start this walk: Sanam Chai.
What we actually ended doing was taking a boat ride on the river. We still were able to see the sights (pointing them out primarily). And we stayed a night on Soi Rambuttri, which is nearby Khao San Road. That evening and the following morning we were able to do quite a bit. I still recommend that 7-mile walk. I would just consider doing it during the cool season (Dec - March).
