Christmas in Bangkok
Kade
Dec 2000
People from all over the world, but especially from Northern European and Northern Asian countries - Russia, England, Sweden, China and Japan - flock to the subtropics to escape the harsh winters in their countries. From early Dec. through March is the most ideal weather in Thailand - a lovely 75-80 degrees every day. So to make tourists happy and to encourage shopping and make things fun for Thais, the commercial and secular sides of Christmas are on full display. Lights are strung up. Beautiful Christmas trees and lavish decorations are in hotel lobbies and mega-malls. And big hotels and restaurants are known for their festive feasts. December 25th is not a day off for Thais. Even I had to work on Christmas when I was there!! However, that doesn't mean there aren't actual Christians in Thailand. There's a sizable Chinese Catholic community in Bangkok. Thailand, though, is 95% Buddhist, and Islam comes in second.
