In October 2003, world leaders gathered in Bangkok for the APEC (Asian Pacific Exporting Countries) conference. I remember the hotel, just down the road from where I was teaching, being put under very tight security. President Bush and a huge entourage were staying there. Being the host country, Thailand reached deep into its culture and history in producing an unforgettable Royal Barge Procession down the Chao Phraya River ("River of Kings"). In the background was the beautifully lit Grand Palace.
